I think I know what the Taliban is, but what is this Al Qaeda I keep hearing about?

The Taliban was an unrecognized government of Afghanistan. Al Qaeda is a worldwide militant terrorist group headed by Osama Bin Laden. The US now believe that there is a second person involved with leading this group. His name escapes me at the moment. In the early 1950's here were shmoos in the comic strips. They were white blobs with a head and I think Al Capp drew this.
