    What, or rather who, is the connection between the sinking of three boats crossing the Menai Straits, the first on 5th December 1664, the second on 5th December 1785, and the third on 5th August 1820?

    		Hugh Williams.

    In each case there was only one survivor, and in each case the survivor was called Hugh Williams (not such an uncommon name in Wales as it might be in other parts of the English-speaking world).

    Other sites give the date of the third disaster as 5th December 1860.
