The origin of the word quiz, which appeared around 1780 is unknown but a popular belief is that it was introduced by Mr Daly. He was a manager of a Dublin theatre who wagered that he could introduce a new word into the language within 24 hours. Quiz was written on every accessible wall and everybody in Dublin was asking what it meant which gave it its meaning. He won his bet as the word became part of the language.
