I believe Magnus Magnusson's surname at birth was actually Sigursteinnson, so this presumably was the surname of his father.

MAGNUS MAGNUSSON is Icelandic national who has spent most of his life in Scotland. He was born in Iceland in 1929, of Icelandic parents, but moved to Edinburgh at the age of nine months when his father, the late Sigursteinn Magnusson was appointed European Manager of the Icelandic Co-operative Society.

Calpurnia says: From Travelnet, Icelandic Culture, Names:- 'Only about 10% of Icelanders have surnames or family names. The rest use the system of patronymics, i.e. instead of a surname the first name of the father is used with 'son' or 'dottir' added to it. Thus Magnusson means son of Magnus and Bjarnadottir means daughter of Bjarna.' So, under the Icelandic patronymic system, Magnus Magnusson's name is still Magnus Sigursteinnson. Once the family moved to Scotland, maybe it was easier to change to using a surname in the sense that we Brits understand the term. Presumably, if Magnus had/has a sister, she would be called, say, (first name) Sigursteinndottir. Might have been difficult explaining to Scottish classmates why a brother and sister had different surnames. (And Magnusson is easier for us to say and spell after all!)
