    Question #15754. funtrivia asks:

Did an alien spacecraft crash in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947?

    Mork

    http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/weekly/aa070697b.htm suggests not.

"If I'm right, what we now call "the Roswell Incident" was really little more than a comedy of errors. Nevertheless, in the wake of contradictory actions and statements by government officials and events that seem enigmatic and open to interpretation to this very day, groundwork was laid for the formation of an enduring legend. Few eyebrows were raised by the government's behavior at the time, but some 40 years later — following America's national loss of innocence in the Vietnam War and the widespread disillusionment following Watergate — the Roswell Incident was well positioned to evolve into an icon of everything we fear is wrong with modern life."

In my opinion it is still unclear if this event actually did take place. There are arguments for an against the crash landing of a UFO. For example, why was a cover-up initially launched by the US government for a downed weather balloon? Even if it was part of project Mogal (spying on Russian atomic bomb testing) the government would surely have expected them to go astray and there ultimate detection by civilians inevitable. There are too many credible witnesses to the event who stood nothing to gain by it and who have to this day stood by their story and gained nothing from it. There were too many changes in the offical account of events by the US government over the years following investigations by individual researches like Stanton Friedman. On the other hand, eye witness descriptions (Dr Jessie Marcel Junior) of the material retrieved from the alleged crash site appear to be inconsistant with what one would expect for an extraterrestrial vehicle ie. why would an extraterrestrial vehicle contain a substance like balsa wood? In my opinion when I first heard of the story approximately 20 years ago it smacked of credibility but that was just a gut feeling I had.
