In 1803 the US purchased 'Louisiana' from France for fifteen million dollars. To judge from the map at http://www.jmu.edu/madison/louispurchase.htm, 'Louisiana' included all or part of what subsequently became the states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.
