    What sculpted bird sits atop the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City and why?

    it's a seagull, and it commemorates an occasion in pioneer days when seagulls killed off a plague of crickets that were threatening to eat up the crops.

    Looking at other sites, I get the impression that the seagull is on a monument in the Temple Square rather than on top of the temple, but I'm not sure.
