Who was the real person who was the basis for the charecter M in ian flemings james bond books ?

Question #16036. Asked by ali w.

    Tiresias

M is believed to have been based on Sir Stewart Menzies, former head of MI6. Menzies was an Old Etonian, former soldier whom Fleming knew during his time at the Admiralty in naval intelligence. That's the theory. Fleming also called his mother 'M' and some have seen parallels between the way Mrs Fleming treated her son and how M handles Bond. Source: John Pearson's biography of Fleming
