Prince Consort is not a title automatically bestowed on the husband of the queen regnant. When Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, was created Prince Consort in 1857 this was done by Letters Patent. The present Queen's husband, HRH Philip Duke of Edinburgh, is not the Prince Consort, he is merely the consort of the Queen.
