Why do some fruits have only one large seed (eg.plum)and others have hundreds of tiny seeds (eg.kiwi fruit)- any ideas please?

One reason could be that they require different methods of dispersal. Animals and birds eating the fruit will swallow the numerous small seeds and deposit them a far distance from the original plant. The larger single seed or stone may not require such widespread dispersal depending on the local conditions they are growing in.
