John Wilkes Booth was a Confederate and a popular stage actor who decided to try to kill Lincoln. He is quoted as saying, 'What a glamorous opportunity there is for a man to immortalize himself by killing the President. So, other than his sympathy for the south, John Wilkes Booth was trying to immortalize himself.
