New Mexico adopted the black bear as the state animal, and on the State's golden anniversary in 1962, a female bear named Goldie, from the forest near Magdalena, was sent to the National Zoo to become Smokey Bear's mate. No cubs were ever born to Smokey Bear and Goldie. www.smokeybear.org/

Smokey the Bear is based on a real life event and bear. In the 1950's in New Mexico, firefighters found a cub that had been separated from it mother during the fire and had climbed up a tree. The firefighters rescued the cub, named him Smokey and one of them took Smokey home to care for him, because he was so young. Then someone came up with the idea of using Smokey for an ad campaign on preventing forest fires, especially aim at children. Smokey the Bear and the slogan 'Only you can prevent forest fires' was born. The real Smokey was sent to the National Zoo in Washington DC. This zoo does have a wide range of research and educational programs, which include pioneering research on behavioral ecology, veterinary medicine, wildlife nutrition, reproductive physiology, and techniques for breeding endangered species. There is no mention of Smokey ever being mated. See the following web sites: http://www.smokeybearstore.com/ http://www.smokeybear.com/ http://natzoo.si.edu/
