From Compton's interactive Bible: 666. Various schemes for decoding these numbers result in such names as Euanthas, Lateinos, and Nero Caesar (currently the favorite). Others take 666 as a symbol for the trinity of evil and imperfection--each digit falls short of the perfect number 7.

From Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable: One of the most plausible suggestions is that it refers to Neron Caesar, which in Hebrew characters with numerical value gives 666, whereas Nero, without the final 'n', as in Latin, gives 616 (n=50), the number given in many early manuscripts, according to Irenaeus. Another suggestion is that St. John chose the number 666 because it just fell short of the holy number 7 in every {particular;} was straining at every point to get there, but never could. You may wish to check Brewers for yourself as there is a lot more detail which may be helpful (see under reference The Number of the Beast).
