Well that's a hull of an answer and I would have to agree as I found - A shipwright's job was to design and build the ship. The first step in building a wooden ship was laying the keel. The keel was the 'spine' of the ship. Attached to the keel where several 'ribs' and over these ribs was the planking for the outer hull of the ship.
