Brainy Blonde says: It is John H. Glenn Jr. of course, but along with being the first American to orbit earth, he also set a transcontinental speed record from Los Angeles to New York in 1957. Glenn flew a F8U Crusader across the country in 3 hours and 23 minutes. It was the first transcontinental flight to average supersonic speed. He was also on-board the space shuttle Discovery, when it landed safely on November 7, 1998. Making John Glenn, at 77, the oldest person to travel into space.
