Am watching a new TV drama (ITV - England) about a jury. The jury are involved with a murder trial at the Old Bailey - I thought that only experienced jurors were summonsed to trials at the Old Bailey and that there would be no 'first-timers' on the jury. Am I correct?

To the best of my knowledge the system for summoning jurors in England is not selective, in other words anyone between the ages of 18 and 70 is liable to serve if and when called. The only exceptions are persons who are exempt for various reasons such as their employment, mental and physical condition etc. As the whole point of the selection process is to come up with a jury panel which represents the adult population at large there are bound to be some jurors who are serving for the first time on any jury.

In addition to the first answer. A person aged 65 years or over may decline jury service without giving a reason.

The Old Bailey is no different to any other Court re jury summons. It's just that it is in London and that many famous trials have been held there.
