British Royal Family: The current House is the House of Windsor, but am I right in thinking that when the heir eventually becomes King or Queen they loose this name and become known as Rex or Regina?

In the normal course of events HRH The Prince of Wales on inheriting the throne would become the first monarch of the House of Mountbatten. However by Proclamation the Queen first declared in 1952 that her children and descendants will belong to the House of Windsor, and later in 1960 that this Declaration will only affect her descendants in the male line who will bear a royal style and title. Descendants outside this class will bear the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.

Rex and regina come from latin and simply mean king and queen. So Elizabeth Regina means Queen Elizabeth. This is an official title and not a family name. It is frowned on to the address the queen as Betty Windsor.

Technically, they do not lose their name, but must sign themselves as (eg) 'Elizabeth R' or 'Elizabeth Regina'. Before becoming monarch, they can sign whatever they wish. E.G: Princess Anne signed her marriage register as just 'Anne'.
