Where do we get the term 'shrink' (psychoanalyst)?

    Question #16965. Asked by Socrates.

    Barrow boy

My Chambers 20th Century dictionary attributes this slang to the US as being short for headshrinker. Headshrinkers used to hunt their fellow humans, cut their heads off and shrink them - not much therapy there!
