How long does an average washer and dryer last, an average, I'm well aware that a more expensive washer and dryer probably lasts longer and a real cheap one doesn't last as long?

I'd expect to get about 10 years out of one.

It depends on how much you use them. Mine are six years old. They look and work the same as when I got them. If I had four kids, it would be a totally different matter. This applies to the less expensive models right up to the top-of-the-line models. I expect my set to last longer than me!!!

Nice to see you back, Brainy. I DO have four children. My first washing machine lasted 11 years, my second 12 years and my third, 8 years. I have just bought a new one. It has so many features to go wrong that I suspect it will not last as long as the other three, even though it is destined to be used much less, all but one of my brood having now fled the nest. I am also using my third tumble drier. I cannot afford expensive machines but buying really cheap ones is false economy. I usually buy the standard, middle of the range model from a reliable manufacturer. My repair mechanic told me that washing machines generally have a working life of about five years. Anything extra is a bonus, so I have been lucky so far. Combination washer/driers tend not to last nearly as long as separate machines.
