    U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM)

    The American military known as Special Operations Forces, or SOF's. This new "branch" of the armed forces was created in the mid-1980's and is organized under its own unified command, called U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM). Consisting of special units from the other branches of the armed forces, such as Green Berets, Rangers, SEALs, and Delta Force, this new fighting command is recognized internationally as the most well-trained and well-equipped special operations force in the world.

    The expertise of the SAS is well known throughout the world. The SAS is a small, secretive and specialised service that forms a significant part of the United Kingdom Special Forces. The other parts are: the Special Boat Service (SBS)The SBS is the Royal Navy's special forces unit. Whilst wxperts in Maritime Counter-Terrorism (MCT) and amphibious warfare, they also operate on dry land. Since its inception during World War 2, the SBS has been a first class naval special operations force, pioneering many techniques used by other nations, including the US Navy SEALs.
    , the Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR), and the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG).
    Originating in 1941 the SAS has alliegences with Australian SAS and the New Zealand SAS and the Regiment has both participated in the formation of other national special forces formations, or served as an inspiration:
    ie Australia -Australian SAS, Canada -Joint Task Force2, New Zealand - NZ SAS, United States - Delta Force, Germany-Kommando Specialkrafte.
    Since the early 1980s, the SAS has built up an almost mythical reputation particularly after the successful 1980 hostage rescue at the Iranian Embassy siege in London.
