Ty Cobb has the highest CAREER batting average at .367, but Rogers Hornsby has the highest average for a SEASON, at .424

If you're looking for the highest single season average ever, then its Hugh Duffy at .440 in 1894 .. Hornsby is the highest for the 20th century but would rank tied for 5th if the 19th century is included!
