Is Lipton tea of British or American origin?

    Question #17110. Asked by OK-yah.

    Tiresias

The Lipton company was owned by Sir Tommy Lipton so would have been British. As well as a tea merchant/grocer Lipton was a well known yachtsman between the wars.

The Lipton Company is of British origin, with Thomas J. Lipton opening his first shop in 1876.

Thomas Lipton enters the tea business to assure supplies of tea at low cost for his 300 grocery shops in 1890. He registers a new trademark for the tea he has been selling since 1890, in 1893.

For the history of the company and tea see:

However, over the course of the company history, American companies were purchased. See:

    Lipton was Scottish.
