The Grumman F6F was officially dubbed the Hellcat. There were two basic production variations, the first being F6F-3 (including sub-variants F6F-3E, F6F-3N and F6F3-P). The second variant was the F6F-5 (with D,K,N and P) sub-variants. The F6F-5s were known as Hellcat IIs. Apart from the official designations above, I can find no nicknames. Around 250 F6F-3s served with the Royal Navy and were known as either Gannet Is or Hellcat Is. If your question is from a normal quiz, I'd say the answer is Hellcat. If you are an air fanatic, then this answer may be simplistic. Source: The American Fighter ISBN.0-85429-635-2
