Remains of fruit pressed for wine?

Question #17385. Asked by farley. (Mar 17 02 11:42 AM)

The French word is 'marc'. A couple of French-English dictionaries at www.yourdictionary.com suggest that this word is used in English as well, i.e. they give the translation of 'marc de raisin' as 'marc'.

Albeit that I love 'marc' I'm not sure that it is the correct answer.

It is only a correct answer if one is considering a further drink made out of the remains of fruit pressed for wine - it isn't the name for the residue. Also even on the first premise the answer depends on the context since grappa and various other lethal drinks also satisfy the questions (depending upon the country).

I certainly wouldn't guarantee that 'marc' is the answer, but it is the word (in French, and according to some dictionaries in English too) for the residue. The spirit produced from this residue is also called 'marc', which in this case is short for 'eau de vie de marc'.
