I believe it was Paul McCartney, without the partnership with John Lennon. He says the idea for the song came to him as he woke up one morning.

'Yesterday' is not only a beautiful song but it has a number of firsts attached to it: it was the first time that any Beatle recorded without any of the other four members of the band; it was the first score written for a Beatles song and it was the first time anyone other than the four Beatles or their producer played on a record (in this case it was a string quartet); it is the most performed song in history and its appeal continues to be as strong as ever.
Detail reproduced on all lithographs; in 1965 George Martin and Paul McCartney added some humour to their recording session with scribbles proclaiming that Yesterday was in fact written 'By Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Martin Esq. and Mozart'! http://docs.yahoo.com/docs/pr/release784.html

Paul claims that 'Yesterday' was his and his alone. In recent years he has asked Yoko to agree that the song writing credits be changed to McCartney/Lennon, rather than the other way around, but she refused.
