I think these sort of questions originated with the cryptic crossword. Clues such as GEGS (answer: scrambled eggs), ELK CITS (answer: stickleback) and HIDEOU...SE (answer: snout) all taxed me in my younger days when I was wont to tackle the Daily Telegraph crossword. The Guardian went somewhat over the top I recall with the alleged cleverness of some of the clues, which probably explains why I finished up with The Times crossword as my daily mental exercise (apart from work, which came a poor second).
