The song 'Too Soon to Know'. I have always understood that Roy Orbison recorded it as a tribute to his wife after her death in an accident.A friend argues that it was always a Don Gibson song and that Don was the original writer and singer of the song. A substantial wager depends on the right answer. Any ideas, folks?

Since there is money riding on this I would look closely at the wording of your wager. Roy Orbison could well have recorded this as a tribute to his late wife even though he did not write it and it had been previously released by some one else. Tributes do not have to be original material. Keep us informed of the outcome.

Don Gibson did write Too Soon to Know in 1957, and also recorded it. Roy Orbison covered it in 1966. See: http://www.orbison.com/ Orbison left for MGM Records in 1965, where he had minor hits with Too Soon to Know among others. It was during these, the 'bad luck years', that Orbison's wife, Claudette, was killed in a motorcycle accident (1966) and two of his sons, Roy Jr. and Tony, died when the family home burned to the ground.(1968)See: http://www.rocknrollvault.com/timeline/royorbison.htm
