I have a problem with a question I set for a pub quiz not so long ago. The question concerned the most recognised brand name in the world. I had McDonalds as the answer, but this was disputed by some. Does anyone know the answer for sure?

    Question #17579. Asked by mk2norwich. (Mar 23 02 12:40 PM)

Just by running the string 'most recognized brand name in the world' through Google, Coca-cola comes up most often.

It is interesting to note that in all the hits that came up with this phrase, McDonalds is not mentioned once. Personally, I would discount the Ferrari claim. It doesn't seem at all plausible to me.

Coca-Cola is the most recognized brand name in the world and to be representing them for this program is a pretty awesome feeling,' said Labonte.

Without running any searches - the brands which have become the generic name for the product must be the most well known and I would suggest that Hoover (for the dust extractor) must be the most well known.

Sorry Fosse, not on this side of the pond. I've never heard anyone call their
vacuum cleaner a hoover. I do know what you mean though. Most people call tissues
Kleenex. What you call plasters, we call band aids, but Band Aid is a brand. I
don't even know what the correct name would be, and I just realized that!!!!!
Back to the question, I am positive it is a Trivial Pursuit question and the
    answer is Coke or Coca-Cola.
When it was finally available in Siberia and China, which was long before
McDonald's was, it truly became a worldwide product. I bet they even have Coke
    vending machines in Antarctica!!!!

I too set this question in a pub quiz within the last year - the reason being as I recollect that I had read a newspaper article stating that for the first time in x years Coca-Cola had lost the number one spot - to MacDonalds. Hope that helps.

It definately has to be Coca Cola, If you think about the McDonalds thing, every McDonald's on the planet (as far as I know) sells Coca Cola, and since Coca Cola is also sold outside McDonalds, and in other fast food places, it must be more popular, and therefore more recognised...
