It was the author of a book he had. I believe the book was about birds.

There is no definitive answer. The famous bird book author is a popular explanation but Fleming whilst working for British Intelligence 'created' a false identity in one of his schemes for a certain 'James Bond' who was indeed a naval commander, so that has to rate as possible too.

Ian Fleming was a bird freak, James Bond wrote a book about birds and that's where Ian took the name from, also 007 is the library code for reference books about birds
