I mean a British-made TV show which has been screened on US television in its original state. I know 'Fawlty Towers' is rated well, but I posted the question in case anyone knows otherwise.

You don't say if you are asking about the US version of a British TV show, or a British TV show aired in the US the same as it was aired in the UK. So, I found the answer to both. The most successful British import in the history of American television until the arrival of 'Millionaire' was a sitcom called 'Till Death Us Do Part.' Producer Norman Lear changed the name to 'All in the Family.' See: http://www.tvbarn.com/2001/04/17.shtml Who Wants to be a Millionaire Around the World. The USA version is broadcast on ABC and is hosted by Regis Philbin (formerly stuck in daytime TV, the show has revitalized his career and is currently one of the most popular on US TV.) http://www.tvchronicles.com/quizshows/quizshowseight.htm Upstairs, Downstairs is the highest rated programs in the history of PBS. The series has been syndicated to both commercial and non-commercial stations in America and is one of the most successful and watched dramatic series in television history. It is estimated that approximately one billion people in over 40 countries have enjoyed Upstairs, Downstairs and the series is still in active syndication.
