It is late in the summer and you are standing in the middle of a small island that is flat but is 200 feet above sea level with vertical cliffs and jagged rocks at the bottom. The island is covered with long grass. There is a stiff westerly wind. Suddenly lightning strikes the most westerly point and a fire starts which is going to engulf the whole island. There is no way off the island. Do you survive?

Question #17663. Asked by Son of The Household. (Mar 26 02 10:01 PM)

    Gnomon

Run to the easternmost point and start pulling up the grass. In a few minutes, you will have cleared a small clearing in the long grass, where you can safely wait until the fire has died out.

    Jeeves

Start a fire to the east of you. This will provide an area of burnt out grass that you can step into when the fire approaches from the west and will act as a fire break.

Thanks Jeeves. You are right as usual and I now know what to do if I am ever caught in Tasmanian fire.
