The 'Acme Thunderer' - 1884 The original 'Acme Thunderer' was the world's first reliable 'pea' whistle, designed in 1884. Pea whistles contained a small dried pea inside to give a 'warble' sound

The warbling sound actually makes the whistle louder and more piercing. Opera singers add a warble to their voice for the same purpose - this is technically called 'vibrato' - although they don't use a pea to do it!
