Some whistles contain a 'pea' while other equally loud ones do not find the spherical object necessary. What is the purpose of the pea?

Question #17696. Asked by Jeeves. (Mar 27 02 7:34 PM)

    The 'Acme Thunderer' - 1884
The original 'Acme Thunderer' was the world's first reliable 'pea' whistle, designed in 1884.
Pea whistles contained a small dried pea inside to give a 'warble' sound

The warbling sound actually makes the whistle louder and more piercing. Opera singers add a warble to their voice for the same purpose - this is technically called 'vibrato' - although they don't use a pea to do it!

A royal possession described in a great epic, this object gave its name to something found at a famous site by an equally famed archaeologist. However, yet another, rather less ostentatious item also bears the name, owing to an inscription that represents one of the oldest known written examples of its language. What are the two objects, where was each found, and what does that inscription say?
