How does one know how much to inflate tires when at a gas station. Can you damage your tires from overinflating. I'm new at this! ?

There will be information regarding the correct pressure of the tires (tyres if you are in the UK - does that mean you put ayr in British tyres and air in American?)in your log book or Information Pack. It could be, as in my car , on a panel on the drivers door frame that is visible when you open the car door. Most garages that have air pumps have notices displaying the correct pressures for all makes of car. It is unwise to over or under inflate tyres and you should follow the manufacturers recommendations

In the Europe, the pump has a pressure gauge on it which tells you the pressure in the tyres. In the instructions for your car and often on the end of the driver's door, the recommended pressure is given. If you can't find a recommended pressure anywhere, use 30 pounds per square inch in all four tyres. It is dangerous to overinflate. In extreme cases the tyre could explode but in lesser cases, the steering of the car will suffer and you might crash. When I bought my present car, some idiot in a garage had pumped my front tyres up to more than twice the recommended pressure and I found the steering was poor. At the recommended pressure it is much better.
