    If my car is running out of petrol on the way home, would it be better to drive fast or slow in order to get as near as possible to home?

    		I was told that the optimum speed was 56mph but the road conditions, number of bends and stops etc that you have to make for your own particular journey may adversely affect that speed.

    		You are better off setting a speed that you will be able to achieve and sticking to it. Say 30mph. Do not slow down or speed up. Keep an absolutely constant speed. Stay in as high a gear as possible. For 30mph, this would probably be 4th gear. If you have to slow down, use the brake rather than the gears. Of course, in an automatic car, you'll have much less control over this.
