Modern Guinness Books of World Records aren't a patch on what they used to be! My trusted 1993 book which is crammed with facts cites a tie, both instances occurring in India with a n estimated crowd of 15 million. 1. At the Hindu festival of Kumbh Mela at Allahabad on 6 Feb 1989 2. At the earlier funeral of the revered C N Annadurai (Madras Chief Minister)in Feb 1969

It is estimated only 400,000 people attended Woodstock. Barrow Boy, right place, wrong time, and I so agree with you about the Guinness book. My 1972 paperback copy is falling apart I use it so much. My 2001 edition is pretty to look at, especially since it is purple, but doesn't contain a whole lot of information!!! Over 25 million people came together at the Maha Kumbh Mela festival in Allahabad, India on January 24, 2001, the largest gathering of humanity in history. See: http://www.kumbhmela.com/ To see a picture of the festival taken from space, go to: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_1137000/1137833.stm
