I will let you interpret this for yourself. In Max Nordau's Entartung, he states 'it is important for society, the individual and the true, scientific and evolutionary destiny of mankind that psychological development should follow its natural course. 'Not till he attains to altruism is man in a condition to maintain himself in society and in nature'. 'Degenerates' are 'attracted by, and feels delight in acts which fill the sane man with disgust and horror.' He cited each symptom as proof of anomalies or abnormalities in the sexual nerve centres or as products of an impaired nervous system. For these 'scientific' reasons, French poets and their works were dismissed as degenerate abnormalities. See: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/hispanic/research/richadoc.html
