There are many answers to this question, and not all are recommended. What works best for me is to simply drink a pint of water before I go to bed, if I've had a few drinks. A hangover is caused by dehydration, so as a general rule, just drink plenty of water, and any unpleasant after-effects should be reduced. Trust me!

If ur drunk not much which make u less drunk (except time), although once this guy told me that sardines work...although I never tried it {myself;} and, since then I have quit drinking.

Socrates is correct if you have already had the drinks although the point about plenty of water is correct. You can slow the effects of alcohol entering the system by eating beforehand - some people swear by a pint of milk 'to line the stomach'. This will only slow the effects - it won't protect you from the breathalyser.

a pint of milk followed by lardy cake usually keeps the 'whirling pits' away.
