My dictionary defines number as: 'A concept of quantity that is or can be derived from a single unit, the sum of a collection of units, or zero.' So, yes zero is a number.

In binary 0 is the absence of one. In all other systems it is the absence of numbers within that system. You try counting to zero. Zero is not a number

SOHC, you've made me get the dictionary out again! Zero - the cardinal number between +1 and -1.
