    The word is derived from Eostre, who was the Anglo Saxon goddess of the Spring.

    The name Easter was adopted for the Christian Paschal festival from Old English easter, a heathen festival held at the vernal equinox in honour of the Teutonic goddess of dawn, called Eostre, which fell about the same time.
