Why do some Bulls have rings in their noses?

So that they can be tethered or led.

Here in the UK bulls have to be licensed once they reach a certain age. It is I believe a requirement of the licence that a ring be inserted in the animal's nose, in order to control it in certain situations.

The truth is--if a Bull becomes very angry, in an emergency, one may pull on the ring which causes the Bull to calm down and kneel.
