I have recently acquired a set of rechargable batteries that claim to hold 1000 times as much charge as a normal AA battery. will it actually charge the batteries to the same energy level 1000 time and then begin to store less as the batteries wear out or will the batteries be on a down hill slope, after the first use, that ends after 1000 charges, leaving them useless after that point ?

I think you've mixed capacity and charging levels. There are several new AA
batteries and chargers on the market. The new Monster charger uses an exotic
NiHLi compound that guarantees 1000 full capacity charges on the batteries.
I don't know of anyway to increase a AA battery's capacity 1000 fold. The
charger claims to have memory and trickle charging capability, and the
batteries are supposed to fully charge, regardless of their level of discharge,
at the time you start charging them. Older batteries used to require that you
discharge them fully, for optimum performance. That's no longer necessary. Look
for the new batteries and chargers at Comp USA.

Yes, they'll be on a downhill slope the whole time.

Think about {it;} the fact that there's a stated limit means that the company knows that the battery has a finite lifetime. A battery wouldn't know that it had been charged 1000 {times;} atoms don't keep track of such things. There's no way that it would charge 1000 times perfectly and *only after that point* start going downhill.

I'd like to see the company's exact {claim;} it would have to state something like 'Guaranteed to charge to a minimum of 1.2 volts and 400 milliampere-hours 1000 times under normal use and proper charging procedure.' This stated minimum capacity will be significantly lower than you'd get from a good alkaline battery.

To maintain this minimum requirement, the battery would initially have to perform better, and do slightly worse each time it's charged.
