Broadcasters banded together to play the single, We Are the World, at 10:50a.m. E.S.T. Stations in the United States were joined by hundreds of others around the world in a sign of unification for the African relief cause. Even Muzak made the song only the second vocal selection it has ever played in elevators and offices since its inception.

I think you are thinking of something else BB as it was only a single they played. The idea for 'We Are The World' came from a group of British artists known as Band Aid who had got together in late 1984 to record a song called 'Do They Know It's Christmas?'. It sold over 3 million copies in the U.K. alone and some wondered if that could be done on a larger scale in the U.S. One person who wondered was Harry Belafonte who got the ball rolling by contacting friends Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson and producer Quincy Jones. Jackson and Ritchie spent only 2 hours writing a song which was to be recorded after the American Music Awards. The idea was that the only way they could get all these artists together in one room was to 'bring the song to them.' So, after the awards show, 45 artists arrived at A and M Studios in Hollywood, CA to record the song. The end result was 21 lead vocal performances from the likes of Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Tina Turner, Huey Lews, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and many more. The song 'We Are The World' was manufactured and distributed for free thanks to Columbia Records. 800,000 copies went to record stores and were gone within 2 days. On April 5, 1985 over 5,000 radio stations worldwide played the song simultaneously. Then on April 13, 1985 the song went to #1 and stayed there for 4 weeks. It sold 7.5 million copies in the U.S. alone. The song would eventually raise {$50} million dollars for famine relief and supplies started being flown to Africa in June of that same year.
