Pigs are supposed to be the smartest animals on the farm. That's why George Orwell chose the pigs to take over Animal Farm and not the dogs.

Many years ago, when I was involved in farming, I was surprised at how intelligent pigs were. They certainly had good memories because whenever they required a repeat course of injections from the vet, they always tried to run off when they saw him coming. But no doubt some pigs are more intelligent than others and the same is certainly true of dogs. The fact that you can train a dog does not of course mean that this is a sign of {intelligence;} in fact it could be argued that the less intelligent animals are those which allow themselves to be trained and to undertake hard work. I don't think there is a definite answer to this interesting question as smartness can be measured in so many different ways.

Lived on a farm for many years,no expert, but had a great respect for these animals - very streetwise. Don't forget 'Babe', now there was one very smart pig!!

I have always believed pigs are smarter than dogs. Here is a site that agrees with that. Most people are unaware that pigs are number 4 on the intelligence scale - first come humans, then apes, dolphins and porkers weigh in at number 4! http://www.blarg.net/~critter/AnimalActors/potbelliedpigs.htm I personally think the number one spot is debatable!!! LOL!!!!!!

Well pigs are quite smart. Dogs are a little smarter though. Just by a bit.

pigs. they're supposed to be the smartest mammals, after Man (ha!) and dolphins.
Dogs are NOT as smart, linksMyHero.
Come on. just think about it: would you call a servile, woofing, drooling, obeying-your-every-command creature smart?

If you have had real experiences with pigs, such a postulate should not astonish you. Alas, perhaps due to slobbish apperance, bulk, eating, etc. these animals have been heavily stereotyped.
pig out
hog, pig, swine for greedy person
sweat like a pig
A pig when related to a human would be seen as a fat, greedy one.
