The longest Test lasted for 10 days in 1938-39. The Durban Test match between South Africa and England was to be played as a timeless Test match and some eleven days later it was still left drawn since England had to begin their two-day rail journey back to their ship at Cape Town. It still remains the longest ever first-class match of ten days of actual play. indeed the 'timeless' test included 10 days that featured play but also one (11/3/39) when no play was possible due to rain. even more bizarrely the game finished at tea on the 11th day also because of rain with England nicely poised at 654-5 - just 42 short of victory. in 1929-30 England played a nine day test v West Indies - no play was possible on the last two days because of rain - the match again was left drawn because of england having to catch a boat home. The other long game of merit was the final test of the 1928-29 series where Australia took on England over 8 days (play on each day - no rain in Oz).
