How can human male sperm be frozen for further use while female eggs cannot?

Question #18111. Asked by django. (Apr 09 02 10:44 AM)

    Gnomon

As far as I know, both Sperm and Eggs can be frozen. So can fertilised eggs (embryos). It is normal practise in IVF to fertilise a number of eggs and freeze any embryos that are not implanted. They can be used later if there is a problem with the first.

The reason we hear more about frozen sperm is that men can produce it easily and in large quantities. Removal of eggs requires opening up the woman. Eggs are also in more limited supply, although I think that the woman has far more than she will ever need in her lifetime.
