What is Queen Elizabeth's last name?

    Question #18179. Asked by lisa.

    Son of The Household Cavalry

Princess Elizabeth (heir presumptive) was her last name before she became Queen Elizabeth.

Seriously though, an excerpt from a declaration made at a Privy Council meeting, held at Clarence House on 9 April, 1952 stated, "The Queen today declared in Council her will and pleasure that she and her children shall be styled and known as the House and Family of Windsor, and that her descendants, other than female descendants who marry and their descendants, shall bear the name of Windsor."

A later declaration (8 February, 1960) stated that all her descendants who did not bear the "style, title or attribute of HRH, and the titular dignity of Prince or Princess" shall bear the name of Mountbatten-Windsor.

Wouldn't it be the same as Prince Philip's, or does her importance change that rule? (I'm a Yank, what do I know.)

To answer Socrates - No it's not the same as Prince Philip's. His last name when he married Elizabeth in 1947 was Mountbatten, but the problem was being Greek he wasn't considered British enough to have the Royal household adopt his name. It was on the advice of Winston Churchill that they kept the name Windsor, much to Philip's irritation. This is why the Queen's non-royal decendants take the name Mountbatten-Windsor.

The Royal family had actually changed their name to Windsor during the First World War because their previous name sounded too German. Before they were the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gothe.
