To answer Socrates - No it's not the same as Prince Philip's. His last name when he married Elizabeth in 1947 was Mountbatten, but the problem was being Greek he wasn't considered British enough to have the Royal household adopt his name. It was on the advice of Winston Churchill that they kept the name Windsor, much to Philip's irritation. This is why the Queen's non-royal decendants take the name Mountbatten-Windsor. The Royal family had actually changed their name to Windsor during the First World War because their previous name sounded too German. Before they were the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gothe.
