In North America at least, most venomous snakes have a triangular shaped head.

I think I've answered this before but - treat all unknown animals as dangerous, get your local pest controller in to get rid of them. (in the UK we have only one native venomous snake (The Adder - identified by it's zig zag stipes but whose to say the snake hasn't escaped from a zoo!)

I had a problem several years ago. I called a forestry agent to ask if snakes could be poisoned. He told me that the only way to get rid of a snake was to physically kill it. He also told me that if a snake has a rounded head and round eyes, it is not venemous. If a snake has a diamond shaped head and slit eyes, like a cat, it IS venemous. I also found out from my mother that burning sulphur will make them leave an area they inhabit. It was close to July, so I bought several 'smoke bombs' and set them off. After that I had no more snakes. I just didn't want to get close enought to see their eyes, or to kill them. I only have one more suggestion. Do NOT set them off in the basement. I set mine off all around the house, AND in the basement. My house smelt like sulphur for about three months.

Where are you? Leave them alone. They say you can tell by their eyes. Who wants to get that close? Not funny.
If they are brown, orange, blue, get away especially if they have diamond like or moziac patterns on them. I recognize the ones which ae rattlesnakes, copperheads and water moccasins. That's the one's where I lived.
I would call in someone. In the meantime, keep the kids in the house. Don't turn over any logs, stay out of the high grass, don't bring in the wood from the wood pile.
Or, just wear high boots, don't pick up stuff off the ground.

Oh, they get up into the trees too, so that could be a problem. Snakes alive.
