I know this might sound dumb, but there are a lot of quizzes on this site which include ' 101 ' in their titles. Is there some reason for this?

    Question #18223. Asked by mk2norwich.

Yes. In America '101' is often used to colleges to indicate 'hard, tough'. It's taken from George Orwell's novel '1984', where 'Room 101' is an individualized torture-chamber where whatever the individual victim fears most of all actually hhappens to him/her - whatever, for that victim is 'the worst thing in the world'

The number 101 after any subject may mean difficult in the US, but in Canada it
means the opposite. Here, 101 means the first in a series of courses that get
progressively harder, and each one is a prerequisite to the next. For example
Accounting 101, Accounting 102 etc. Anything 101 would cover the basics and
    general knowledge.

As far as I have ever known, the 101 designation would indicate a beginners' class. You would have to complete this before going on, as any subsequent classes in the course would build upon what you learned without repeating the basics.

Well there you go, it means the same in the US as it does in Canada. I thought
it did McGruff, but I didn't want to come right out and say nuages was wrong.
I wonder where that explanation comes from. I've certainly heard of the book 1984.
However, the only term I've heard used in real life is 'Big Brother.'
