Sounds like it would be in Manhattan's East Village in the Sixth Street's Little India section.

Gastronomy New York is a summary of all the kitchens of the world. It is in addition the only city in the world whose choice of good establishments at reasonable price is also vast. In Chinatown, Chinese kitchens, Vietnameses and Thai compete. In Little Delhi (on the 6th St, between Second Ave and First Ave), it is the Indian kitchen which dominates. Chelsea on its side is without any doubt the district of New York where gastronomical diversity are represented best. For the restaurants a la mode, Tribeca, for a few years, has detrone SoHo. Finally Harlem is famous for its kitchen soul (black kitchen of the South), although the influence of West Africa is felt more and more in the district.
