    		An earthquake in 1964 virtually leveled the downtown area and destroyed the fishing fleet, processing plant, canneries and 58 homes. Kodiak was rebuilt by 1968.

    The largest U.S. Coast Guard base in the country is located just south of the City of Kodiak.
